Description: This workshop is a comprehensive and detailed exploration of the key elements used in creating dynamic “Expressionist Style” Landscapes and Floral Paintings using transparent dyes on white China silk. Day 1: We will discuss fundamental design principles and composition used to create landscapes with depth, perspective and scale. We will stretch silks and organize our materials and work area for the day. Examples and Demonstrations of Techniques will follow. You will master advanced dye application techniques that will “Raise the Bar” for the overall success of your landscape paintings. We will explore color choices along with the play of light and shadows from nature. Receding mountain ranges will fade into masterful skies with wispy clouds while misty valleys will settle amidst mid-range peaks. Natural tree lines and man-made details will provide relatable elements that create scale and will ground the viewer’s experience. Day 2: We will focus on loose, expressive Floral Compositions that capture the essence and intuitive structure of various flowers without all the details. Both days will include extensive and detailed demonstrations on creating masterful color transitions including layering and overpainting. We will explore the use and effect of soft, transitionary, “Wet on Wet” Hombres that will complement “Wet on Dry” organic line building techniques. No Resists will be used. The goal will be to bring all these elements together to capture the essence of your subject without “Overworking” the painting. You will come away with two Impressionist Masterpieces.

Materials Provided: 24x36” Stretcher, two silk panels, Jacquard Red Label dyes, distilled water, storage cups and mixing pallet.

Materials Fee: $45

Students should bring: Hair dryer, favorite large and medium size brushes, masking tape and pins for favorite stretching method, landscape and flower photos.
