Class Description: In this workshop, students will work on a frame to allow for stretched silk from appx 24x30” for completed artwork to be displayed in a standard 22x28” frame. In this fun approach to silk painting, we will be influenced by many of the 20th century abstract expressionist painters including Jackson Pollack, William de Kooning, and Helen Frankenthaler among others to free yourself up to create intuitive, expressive and emotional art on silk.Students will combine soy wax layering and thickened dye to create expressive, whimsical abstracted painterly compositions. The transparent quality of dyes will facilitate llayering of values which will create depth and textures.,This is an opportunity for students to let go of control and allow for a spontaneous and unexpected result in their finished silk painting

 

Materials Fee: $35

 

Materials Provided: Electric skillets to melt the wax, irons, assortment of brushes to apply way. Tjanting tools to apply wax lines, soy wax, primary and secondary colors of Jacquard Red Label dye, assorted disposable cups and jars for mixing dyes, sodium alginate to thicken dye, erasable pens to sketch with, rubbing alcohol.

  

Materials to Bring: Frame and method to attach silk to frame (clips, pins, tape etc.), silk to fit frame sized appx 24x30”. Silk type is optional but at least 10mm. Suggested types of silk are satin, twill, crepe de chine, and charmeuse.

Bring reference for color and composition inspiration. Paper towels, disposable gloves, water container (quart size), watercolor brushes sizes 12-16 rounds, any tjanting tools you want to use.

 

Instructor Bio:  Leslie has spent most of her life in the vibrant city of New York, where she enjoyed a successful textile print designer in the heart of the NYC Fashion center. Leslie’s designs have been seen on many brands such as Ann Taylor, Cold Water Creek, Macy’s and Casual Corner to name a few. Her designs have also been featured on couture gowns of Oscar de la Renta, Fendi, and Ralph Lauren. 

 

Leslie now calls Northern Georgia home and her studio is there where she has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of fine art paintings and wall hangings where she has cultivated a deep affinity for utilizing color to breathe life into a vibrant and harmonious art.

 

While batik remains her favorite medium for fine art, she also ventures into other avenues of expression, including watercolor, mixed media, and collage, constantly expanding the horizons of her artistic journey.

Materials provided  For classroom use, electric skillets to heat soy wax, irons, several tjanting tools to apply wax lines, assortment of naturall bristle brushes to apply soy wax, soy wax, primary and secondary colors of Jacquard Red Label dye, mixing cups,, sodium alginate, Frixion pens (heat erasable pens) to lightly and loosely sketch design on silk, plain newsprint for ironing wax out of silk.
