The Life Aquatic M/T
Instructor: Carol Sullivan Workshop Description: Experience a unique perspective from underwater as we create a silk painting that will showcase the beautiful, refracted light streaming through the water. We will use the “Sistek Method” of treating the silk with magic sizing to inhibit dye flow. We will also be using cold wax to maintain white areas and various edges. Expect to come away with a completed or nearly completed painting to steam at home.
Materials Provided: PVC frames, ice tray pallettes, dyes, dilutant, magic sizing, cold wax, resists, digital projector.

Students will Bring: 18x24” 16mm silk, silk pins, masking tape, scissors, paper towels, gloves, variety of brushes, palettes, small brush for cold wax.
Instructor Bio: Growing up around boats and sailing to distant locales have influenced Carol's artistic style and themes. Mother Nature in all her mercurial forms inspires her artistry as she interprets sea, sky, flora, and fauna in her work, both literally and figuratively. The silk/dye combination can be a very impressionistic, loose medium, or quite controlled. Combining those methods along with endless experimentation keeps her work vibrant and ever-changing. The results are often surprising, but never disappointing.As soon as Carol graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art she began to create her own combination of techniques with hand-painted and quilted fabric pieces. Over the years this technique grew to include the use of the Japanese “gyotaku” method of fabric printing using real fish. Art quilts were her focus for many years. Her fabric art has been featured in galleries in Maryland, Maine, and the Bahamas and has an international following.
