Description: Experimental approaches and unconventional applications of different resists will free the artist from sole reliance on gutta. Using these new techniques and a creative blending of colors will allow the artist to create dramatic, vibrant skies and landscapes. This workshop is for the artist who wants more freedom in Silk Painting.

    By treating the silk with a sizing and working on a heavier silk a more painterly approach is explored to depict landscapes and especially skies.

Materials Provided: Silk, sizing, resists, water containers, test strips

Materials Fee: $50

Students should bring: 2 sets of stretcher bars to make an inside measurement of 16 ½” x 20 ½. Outside measurements of 20” x 24” should work.

Accessories to hold silk to frame. The silk, when stretched must be taut and not have any give to it. Bring 3 prong tacks, thumbtacks, staples, etc. DO NOT BRING PUSHPINS.

Supports for frame, 4 legs or 16 oz. cups, these are used to keep the silk off the table.

3” or 4” foam brush applicator that they us in house painting.

Mixing containers at least 4, yogurt containers will work. Brushes in various sizes. Must include a large round, 9# or 10#. If you have Rozome bushes bring them.

Palette, your choice

 

Instructor Bio:  Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Diane graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a B.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking. After the Art Institute she went on to receive her teaching certification from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. After moving to Kansas in 1975 Diane continued teaching in her studio and other venues.  Diane has taught workshops and given demonstrations in Kansas and Missouri in Silk Painting and Watercolor. Because of my experience, I was selected as an instructor for Silk Painters International Conferences in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2021.

        Diane is a member of the Watercolor U.S.A. Honor Society, Kansas Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, Silk Painters International, National Association for Independent Artists and Topeka Art Guild. She has also served on the Board of Directors for Silk Painters International.  Her work has been selected for many private and corporate collections. Including those of Sprint Corporation, Lockton Insurance Company, First National Bank of Chicago, Topeka Public Library and the Kansas State Treasurer’s office among others.

            Diane has received many awards, the most recent one was First Place in the Silk Painters International Exhibition at Arrowmont College, third Place in Watercolor U.S.A. National Exhibition at Springfield Art Museum, an Honorable Mention in the “National Fiber Directions” Exhibition among others.
