Description: Join us for two whirlwind days of printing. Create textures and marks difficult to achieve otherwise. Explore a different facet of screen printing; the unpredictable, the intuitive, the “happy accident”. Using fiber reactive dyes, deconstructed and polychromatic screen printing, along with various stencils, experiment with the silkscreen as a painting and mono-printing tool.

No screen printing experience necessary (we do it all wrong anyway). While fiber reactive Dyes will be used in this workshop, acid and other dyes work as well and will be discussed.

In this workshop, our primary objective is via a new technique, to enjoy playful experimentation and to expand student’s ability to express themselves via dye and fabric by adding textural elements.

Materials provided: Fiber reactive dyes, thickeners and all necessary chemicals, handouts, textures, samples, wax and brushes for wax, hot glue gun and glue, tracing paper. Instructor will also provide a small squeegee and syringe for students to take home.

Materials Fee:$25

Materials to bring: Appx 4 yards of prewashed fabric in ½ to 2 ½ yard lengths, acceptable fabrics include silk, rayon, cotton, linen, silk/rayon and smooth, evenly woven fabrics.

T pins or straight pins, disposable gloves, 5 plastic spoons for dye, scissors, at least 5 containers with lids (8 oz is good), paper towels, paint brushes 1-2” foam brushes and regular paint brushes, masking tape, sketch pad or paper, pencil and black sharpie, silk screen 10x12” or 8x10” they do not have to be the same size, embroidery hoops with curtain sheers for mesh can work, tape for taping screen if not already taped, prefer clear gorilla tape over duct tape, do not bring packing tape, and a hair dryer.

A recipient of Mississippi Council on the Arts Fellowships and NJ Arts Fellowships, Kerr has been published in Ornament, Fiber Arts, Surface Design Journal, Fiber Arts Design Book Six and Silk Painting for Fashion and Fine Art.
