Resistad: Texture and Beyond with Natural Materials M/T

This is a class on the techniques Barbara Pease developed with Susan Moyer that were featured in the Spring 2020 issue of the Silkworm. In this class students will learn two different techniques for creating visual textural effects on silk using Resistad as a ground and how to prepare the surface for further painting after creating the texture. You will learn to make your own Resistad solution, prepare dyes, and techniques on how to apply Saran Wrap and gauze. This workshop is about exploring, not perfection.

Barbara says, "For the past few years I have been painting on silk. I am seduced by the vibrancy of the colors and how they play on the sheen of the fabric. For paintings, this is slow and process filled work, so I have only a few detailed pieces in that medium. But I also have been painting scarves. They are fun, bright and abstract and are just about a polar opposite to my watercolors."

I was born and raised in Seattle. I studied fine art at Colorado State University and received my BFA in metalsmithing there in 1977. A cramped apartment and a stint on the polishing bench at a jewelry manufacturer changed my mind about working in metal, so since the early 90's I have worked two dimensionally, drawing and painting. I also went to nursing school along the way and worked as an RN in oncology and hospice for 27 years until my retirement in 2017.
I am greatly looking forward to this next chapter and am eager to see where the art takes me.

Workshop Description	In this class students will learn two different techniques for creating visual textural effects on silk using Resistad as a ground and how to prepare the surface for further painting after creating the texture. On day one students will prepare a Resistad solution and create their texture. They will learn what leaves and flowers make good prints and collect specimens and continue painting. On day two students will finish their paintings, then learn other techniques and continue with hands on experimenting of these processes. Demo's and positive critiques will follow.
Materials provided	For classroom use: Resistad, gum arabic liquid, DuPont diluent, five foam brushes, plastic forks for mixing the Resistad solution, gauze, plastic wrap, waxed paper, packing tape for taping the covers to support pads.

What students are required to bring to workshop	silk stretcher system of your choice no bigger than your heating pad will cover (see below) 12-14 mm habotai at least one yard or enough to make two prints in the frame with extra for optional color testing or third print if there is time at least three colors of DuPont acid dyes (the dyes will mix on the silk) 1/2" foam core board cut to fit inside the frame but large enough to support the entire piece of stretched silk a piece of terry cloth or fleece cut to fit over the foam core board a piece of 1/16"- 1/8" thick plexiglass or acrylic cut the same size as the foam board a heating pad large enough to cover the plexiglass two 8 oz bottles with good secure tops (students will take home Resistad mixture and diluent mix) one 4 oz bottle for each DuPont dye color with secure lid set of cheap measuring spoons (at least 1/2 tsp and 1 tsp size) three round brushes (4, 8 and 12 sizes are good sizes) notepad and pencil enough disposable gloves to last through workshop
