In this workshop each student will learn the design and permanent black resist application techniques that Karla Kay uses for successful permanent black gutta resist designs on silk. In this two day workshop each student will make up to three silk bandanas (to include heavier and lighter silk pieces) to show how the resists and designs look on the different fabrics. Students will also get a brief overview of the use of Procreate on the ipad and its uses as a tool for designing especially as it can assist with color choices. Please be aware that permanent gutta resist does have an odor (similar to rubber cement or Sharpie pens).

Karla Kay has a Bachelor of Fiber Arts and has been the Director for the City of Redmond Old Firehouse Teen Center. She has taught art for the City of Marysville Parks and Recreation. Karla Kay worked at Denney Juvenile Justice Center and helped juvenile offenders complete public art as part of their community service requirements when their offenses kept them from interacting with the general public in a pro-social manner in both individual and group settings. She coordinated and implemented the Blanche Miller Art Exhibition to facilitate juvenile offenders with artist mentors. Karla Kay currently teaches from her home studio in the state of Washington.
