Introduction to Shibori Dyeing

Traditional Japanese resist dyeing technique using folding and binding methods.

Overview

Shibori creates structure through compression and resist. The fold pattern decides your final geometry.

Materials

  • Silk scarf or yardage
  • Fiber-reactive or silk-safe dye
  • Rubber bands and twine
  • Small clamps or craft sticks
  • Gloves and covered work surface

Steps

1

Choose a Fold Pattern

Start with accordion folds or simple triangles for predictable repeats.

2

Bind or Clamp for Resist

Secure folds tightly with twine, bands, or clamps to protect portions of fabric.

Tighter compression creates stronger white/light lines in the final piece.

3

Dye in Controlled Passes

Dip, pour, or brush dye onto the bound bundle. Rotate for balanced coverage.

4

Rinse, Unwrap, and Set

After initial set, rinse to clear excess dye, then unwrap and heat-set per dye instructions.
