Color Blending and Gradients

Master the art of seamless color transitions and beautiful gradient effects on silk.

Overview

Silk rewards intentional moisture control. Better gradients come from brush pressure, water ratio, and timing.

Materials

  • Stretched silk panel
  • 2-3 compatible dye colors
  • Large soft wash brush
  • Clean water and mixing palette
  • Practice swatch strips

Steps

1

Map Your Transition

Plan where each color starts and fades. Lightly mark zones before painting.

2

Pre-Wet for Smooth Flow

Dampen the section evenly with clean water to reduce hard edges.

3

Apply Base and Midtones

Lay first color, then introduce the second while both are still active.

Use a clean damp brush between colors to soften the meeting line.

4

Refine With Transparent Layers

After drying, glaze thin layers to deepen transitions without muddying colors.
