Patterns in the Sky
Silk Painters International invites all SPIN members to enter a juried exhibition taking place at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico from August 1 through October 12, 2008.
A display of hand painted silk banners will hang for 2 1⁄2 months including the International Balloon Fiesta - October 4-12, 2008. This balloon event at adjacent Fiesta Field is attended by nearly one million people from around the world and features the flight of 700 hot air balloons over a 9 day period.
Crepe de chine banners 1 yard wide and 2 yards long, displaying a theme of hot air balloons in an original design and painted with silk dyes will be suspended by wooden dowels throughout the Museum. The facility is fitted with UV glass throughout.
One entry per member or team of members in collaboration will be accepted. Entries will be juried by the SPIN Exhibition Committee and the Museum Curator. No entry fee is required.
Artists will jury into the exhibition with a sample piece 12X18 “ silk crepe de chine using silk dyes and an original balloon design.
Note: this design need not be the same design as the banner piece. The sample entry will be juried based on silk painting skill and good use of design elements. Sample entries will become the property of the Museum and will be exhibited in an educational display along with bios and artists’ statement .
You may wish to visit balloonfiesta.com and google hot air ballooning for motivation and inspiration. Also view the Museum by going to cabq.gov, then to “Balloon Museum” or “b”. Your library, both adult and children’s sections can be helpful as well.
Accepted artists will be provided with white silk yardage for banner execution. Banners will be sold in silent auction throughout the exhibition. Proceeds divided between the AAAIBM and SPIN will be assigned to education programs. Any unsold banners will be returned to the artists.
Banners will not be judged nor awards given.
