Introduction to Woodturning with Charlie Ryland

This two-day workshop will offer a broad introduction to woodturning through the creation of a series of small, functional household items.  Students will become familiar with the lathe and its tools through basic spindle turning, and quickly move into bowl turning for a more in depth look at the larger principles and techniques of turning.  Participants will leave the class with several pieces

Charlie Ryland is a woodworker and furniture maker.  Charlie trained formally at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he primarily studied fine cabinetmaking and traditional 17th and 18th century furniture making.   He is most dedicated to producing furniture typical of working-class households of the past.  He is fascinated by the relationship between functional objects and the body, as well as the role American mythology and history plays in the production of objects.  Charlie was an Arrowmont Artist-in-Residence from 2015-16, and was an instructor of many woodturning and woodworking workshops.
